As part of efforts to improve the transparency and accountability of the police, the Police Administration will deploy its first body cameras in May of this year.

Police body cameras are small-focus devices, often worn on an officer's chest to capture images. It has a microphone for recording sounds and an internal memory for data or sequences for later badysis and badysis.

Alex Amponsah-Asiamah, Executive Director of Services, Deputy Chief of Police Communication (DCOP), told Daily Graphic during an interview in Accra that the police administration was going to receive the first batch of 300 body cameras in mid-April this year.

He added that 3,000 pieces should be delivered by the end of the year.

Mr Amponsah explained that the decision to use body cameras was part of the police transformation program in order to boost public confidence in the service.

No lawsuit for brutality

Despite reports of police brutality, prosecution or punishment is rare.

Although authors in some cases are identified, cases are sometimes settled with excuses.

However, in most cases, no compensation is paid, while the safety organization involved can promise to offer better working relations with the media.

The state-run Daily Graphic recently reported that its audits revealed a long list of victims, including reporters, photojournalists, station directors and editors, who were brutally badaulted by soldiers and police.

In some cases, the police administration said that a lack of evidence had stifled the prosecution of police officers suspected of brutalizing citizens or of being misled in the performance of their duties.

Mr. Amponsah-Asiamah said that the use of body cameras by police officers in the field would improve the collection of evidence necessary for further prosecution in alleged cases of misconduct of the police.
