Joseph Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo, former MP for Kpone-Katamanso constituency, advised members of the Municipality’s Assembly not to allow politics to create hostility between them.
“Politics should never divide us; it is everyone’s constitutional right to choose which political party to belong to and that should not make us enemies,” Afotey-Agbo said during Mr. Samuel Okoe Amanquah as head of the municipal executive of Kpone-Katamanso. (MCE).
The former regional minister said that no political party will be in power forever as such, that establishing good relations is important in the political brotherhood.
“Good relationships is a strategy I used when I was in office, the relationship you build with others would allow you to gain their support when applying for a job,” he said.
Mr. Afotey-Agbo urged members of the Assembly to be tolerant and accept all disagreeable expressions from the public as it was part of politics.
He pleaded with the members of the Assembly to properly play their role in achieving better results for the Municipality of Kpone-Katamanso.
Assembly members overwhelmingly voted for Samuel Okoe Amanquah, the president’s candidate for municipal chief executive (MCE), with 100% approval.
All 27 members, including government appointees, voted ‘yes’ to confirm the candidate in an election overseen by the Election Commission (EC).
The law on local government requires that a candidate obtain a two-thirds majority of the votes of the members of the assembly to run for office.
Mr. Amanquah will take over the areas of power in the region from outgoing MCE, Mr. Solomon Tettey Appiah.
Mr. Henry Quartey, Regional Minister of Greater Accra, congratulated Mr. Amanquah on his appointment and congratulated the members of the Assembly for the unity they showed in approving the candidate.
He instructed the MCE not to play politics when sharing development projects for the members of the Municipality Assembly and called on the Assembly members to bury their differences and unite for the development of Kpone.
Mr. Joseph Akuerteh, deputy of the constituency of Kpone-Katamanso, pledged to support the MCE for the development of the municipality.
“It is said that after the development of the policy should be the results, so I congratulate Mr. Amanquah and I have no other option to support him,” he added.
Mr. Amanquah, in his acceptance speech, thanked President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his appointment and also thanked Assembly members for his confirmation.
He said that the development of the municipality would be a priority and urged members of the assembly to join forces to help build the image of the municipality of Kpone Katamanso.
