Drinking pomegranate juice during pregnancy can improve brain development and fetal connectivity.

Pomegranate juice is a particularly rich source of polyphenols, known to cross the blood-brain barrier.

Polyphenols, which include tannic acid and ellagitannins, are part of a clbad of antioxidants found in many foods and beverages, including nuts, berries, red wine and teas.

"Our study provides preliminary evidence suggesting potential protective effects for neonates exposed to pomegranate juice while they are in the uterus," said the senior author of the study. study, Terrie Inder, from Brigham Hospital and Women's in the United States.

In the study published in the journal PLOS One, the team presents the preliminary results of a clinical trial of pregnant women diagnosed with infertility in infants.

In RCIU cases, a baby in the uterus is small for gestational age, often because of problems with the placenta, which brings oxygen and nutrients to the growing fetus. One in 10 babies is considered to have IUGR.

The current randomized controlled trial included 78 mothers with IUGR diagnosed between 24 and 43 weeks of gestation.

Women were randomized to receive eight ounces of pomegranate juice a day or a matched placebo / polyphenol-free calorie placebo. Women drank the juice daily from registration until delivery.

The team measured several aspects of brain development and brain damage, including brain macrostructure, microstructural organization, and functional connectivity.

Although the team did not observe differences in brain macrostructure, however, it found regional differences in white matter microstructure and functional connectivity.

"These measurements tell us about the functional development of the brain. We found no difference between brain and baby growth, but we found an improvement in the cabling network and brain development as measured by synchronous blood flow and visual brain development. " Inder.
