TAIPING, Jan. 30 – Dr. Lee Boon Chye, Vice Minister of Health, said today that the elimination of waste and the improper disposal of food waste was the reason for the spread of rabies.
He added that such behavior hindered the efforts of the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) to fight rabies by eliminating stray animals.
"They are moving to places where they can find food waste or litter as it is their source of food.
This allows dogs at large to come into contact with dogs infected with rabies and difficult to control by the authorities, "he told reporters after going to the public forum. on rabies organized at Larut Matang and Selama's health offices here.
"The public should also play its part in solving this problem. They must not throw and dispose of food waste properly. Litter attracts strayers, "he added.
Taiping and Bukit Gantang have been declared rabies-affected areas following the detection of four positive results following two bite reports in December.
Dr. Lee said that it was important to vaccinate or eliminate all stray animals from an area infected with rabies in order to prevent the disease from spreading further.
The chief of security and law enforcement of Taiping City Council, Musnarizal Abdul Manap, said there were about 1,000 stray animals in the rabies zone and that 328 of them were dead. 39, only between them have been eliminated so far.
Asserting that there were about 50 illegal dumping sites in Taiping alone, he said the efforts to locate stray animals had only partially succeeded.
Since yesterday, DVS and local authorities have vaccinated about 3,700 dogs around Taiping and about 28 human vaccines have been used for high-risk cases.
Dr. Lee pointed out that rabies is potentially life-threatening and currently incurable.
"In Sarawak, 16 cases resulted in death and the last is paralyzed. In Taiping, there is still no case of human rabies and it is under control, "he said.
When asked how a rabies infection had occurred in Taiping, Dr. Lee stated that the exact cause was not known, but that it was possible that the The disease has been transmitted from Thailand because fishermen from Kuala Sepetang here are taking their dogs with them when fishing in the north.
Rabies in Thailand is endemic.
