Muscat: Pope Francis I and King Mohammed VI of Morocco made a joint call for the preservation of Jerusalem "as a symbol of peaceful coexistence".

Posted in the context of the visit of the pontiff in the kingdom of North Africa, the statement states: "We consider that it is important to preserve the holy city of Jerusalem / Al-Quds Acharif as heritage common to humanity and in particular to the followers of the three monotheistic religions, meeting place and symbol of peaceful coexistence, where mutual respect and dialogue can be cultivated.

"To this end, the specific multi-religious character, spiritual dimension and particular cultural identity of Jerusalem / Al-Quds Acharif must be protected and promoted.

"We therefore hope that, in the Holy City, the free access of the adherents of the three monotheistic religions and their right of worship will be guaranteed, so that in Jerusalem / Al-Quds Acharif, they may raise their prayers to God, the Creator of all, for a future of peace and brotherhood on earth, "the statement concluded.

During his stay in Morocco, the pontiff met with members of the kingdom's Catholic community and migrants.

He also visited the Mohammed VI Institute for the Training of Imams, Morchidines and Morchidates.
