Pope Francis and King Mohammed VI visited the Mohammed VI Institute, which trains Muslim prayer leaders serving in Morocco and abroad. This was one of the first stages of the pope's visit to the kingdom.
Pope John Paul II was the last head of the Catholic Church to visit Morocco in August 1985. Moroccans see the current visit in a positive way and the message that Pope Francis has for them is that Muslims and Christians can coexist peacefully.
In anticipation of this two-day visit, Pope Francis issued a video message to the Moroccan people. He thanked King Mohammed VI for inviting him, as well as the Moroccan authorities, for their collaboration in carrying out this visit.
