Bishop-elect Marini, who has been in charge of the papal liturgies since his appointment by Benedict XVI in 2007, was appointed on August 29 Bishop of Tortona, a diocese of approximately 280,000 people.
The elected bishop, 56, grew up near Tortona in the city of Genoa, where he served as head liturgist for four years. He graduated in canon law and civil law. Prior to his appointment to the Vatican, he was Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Genoa and spiritual director of the seminary.
Since 2019, Bishop-elect Marini has also been responsible for the choir of the Sistine Chapel. There are eight Pontifical Masters of Ceremonies, of which Bishop-elect Marini was the leader. They are responsible for organizing and supervising all the liturgical celebrations of the Pope. One is Mgr. Diego Ravelli, a 56-year-old priest from northern Italy who has been head of the Office of Papal Charities since 2013 and is also one of the emcees.
Another candidate for the role is Father Giuseppe Midili, director of the liturgical office of the Vicariate of Rome, and the third is Mgr. Pietro Moroni, Dean of the Faculty of Theology of the Urban Pontifical University and consultant to the Office of the Liturgical Celebrations of the Sovereign Pontiff.
The change of papal master of ceremonies is one of many recent changes in staff in Vatican offices and dicasteries, as part of the continuing reform of the Roman Curia by Pope Francis.
