Pope Francis, who had surgery last month, told Spanish radio COPE he owed the life of a medic.

The radio will publish a full interview with the pontiff on Wednesday, but an excerpt has already been published.

“[The nurse] saved my life. He is a person with a lot of experience, ”said Pope Francis. Other details of the story have yet to be revealed.

Asked about his health, the pontiff jokingly replied, saying that “every time the Pope is sick, a breeze or a hurricane lashes the conclave”.

Pope Francis also recalled that a nurse had saved his life in 1957, when he was then a student at the seminary, had undergone lung surgery.

On July 4, the pontiff underwent elective colon surgery at the Agostino Gemelli Hospital in Rome and spent 10 days under the care of doctors.
