Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi confirmed that the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis, would visit Mozambique in early September, APA reported on Thursday. , Pope Francis will meet with government officials, political and religious leaders and other personalities.

Nyusi expressed his belief that the Pope's visit would help his compatriots build a united and peaceful nation following a devastating natural disaster that killed hundreds of people and destroyed cities.

"The visit of Pope Francis is a historic event and an opportunity to strengthen the confidence of the Mozambican people to fight for a country increasingly anchored in peace, harmony and the common good"

He added that the Vatican actively participated in the search for a final peace in Mozambique through an apostolic official appointed by the pope personally.

"The presence of the pope," he said, "comes at a time when Mozambicans are deepening a permanent dialogue as the only way to achieve a permanent peace."

Nyusi invited Pope Francis to visit Mozambique during his official visit to the Vatican last September.

This announcement coincided with the Vatican's announcement that Francis will visit not only Mozambique but also Madagascar and Mauritius in early September.

This will be the second Papal visit to Mozambique.

The first was in 1988 by Pope John Paul II, at the invitation of the then President, Joaquim Chissano.
