Thursday night’s fire destroyed dozens of wooden structures at Konkomba Yam Market in Agbogbloshie, Greater Accra region.
The blaze, which reportedly started around midnight, razed a dozen wooden structures, resulting in the loss of many property, including yams, barrels of alcohol and palm oil, and personal effects.
Eyewitnesses said the fire started from one of the wooden structures due to an electrical fault and initial attempts to put it to sleep failed.
Witness account
According to eyewitnesses, it took the intervention of staff from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to extinguish the blaze around 2 a.m. this morning.
“There is a shower operator here; so when the fire started he tried to use his water to put it out but he couldn’t. The firefighters brought in three firefighters and were able to fight the blaze, ”Jacob Ntesen, one of the eyewitnesses, told GraphicOnline.
When Graphic Online arrived in the slum community around 7 a.m. this morning, GNFS staff had left the area.
GNFS could not be reached immediately for comment.
Count the losses
The affected residents were still counting their losses. They were seen trying to remove the burnt yams and other things they could salvage.
Some of those affected said they lost all of their fortunes in the blaze.
A resident, Gloria Wayor, who lost her yams and other property, said: “I took out a loan from the bank to support my business activities. I lost all the yams I bought in the fire and I don’t know how I’m going to repay the loan.
Affected residents called on the government to support them.
