Senior Staff Association (SSA) chairman of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) branch, Engineer William Kwame Asare, said power had been restored to parts of metropolitan Tamale after days of plunged into darkness.

Speaking on The best story of Joy FM on Friday, October 1, 2021 Ing. Asare said power was restored at 4:00 p.m. He said NEDCo officials went with the police to inspect and work on the affected equipment.

“We met today ourselves and decided that the police should come with us to work on the manger which has been out of order for a few days now. So, in the company of police officers, we went into the field and identified the faults and restored the power to this particular distributor, ”he said.

The power outage in some communities in metropolitan Tamale follows a strike by staff at the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).

Staff withdrew their services after young people in the metropolis attacked NEDCo’s offices and destroyed some of the company’s properties on Saturday.

NEDCo, however, made the decision not to travel to communities to work on transformers, power lines and other electrical faults following threats to their lives.

Mr Asare said that although work has started on parts of the affected feeders in the communities, NEDCo has not resumed full service.

This, he said, because NEDCo workers cannot always go to work with armed police, adding that the guarantee of safety must come from the people of Tamale and not from the police.

“We cannot always do our rightful duty in the company of armed police, we have come to a point where we demand that the people of Tamale themselves guarantee our safety and the representatives of the people of Tamale are the members of the Assembly. …. security in place, the real guarantee of security must come from the community itself because it is our client. Ours is a service, we serve the community and we demand that the guarantee of safety come from the community itself, ”he said.
