Premier League has a two-trophy plan for the race under the last day: Sources

LONDON: The Premier League has two trophies and two medals on hold if Liverpool City's Manchester City title race runs until the last day of the season on May 12, sources told ESPN FC.

The defending champions, City, took a one-point lead over Liverpool with a 2-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday, April 24th. They will retain the title if they win their last three games against Burnley, Leicester and Brighton.

But with the possibility for Liverpool to take the lead on Friday by beating Huddersfield, relegated to Anfield, there is still a strong possibility that the title is not decided before the final.

The Wolves are Liverpool hosts on the final day of the season as City travels to Brighton.

With 270 miles separating these two stadiums, sources told ESPN FC that the Premier League had ruled out the possibility of a helicopter carrying the trophy placed halfway between them.

If the race eventually fails, the Premier League will adopt the same plan as on the last day of the 2011-12 season, when City and United were separated by a goal difference between their matches against the Queen's Park Rangers and Sunderland.

A trophy team went to the Etihad stadium and the light stadium, each carrying a trophy and a medal streak, while two goals scored in the match gave the title to City.

Sources told ESPN FC that the Premier League had two identical trophies, one housed at the League headquarters in London and the other in the trophy cabinet of defending champions.
