The British government on Friday presented the second phase of its coronavirus vaccination program which will target the next priority group.
Teachers and police, however, will not be a priority group despite the easing of the lockdown.
The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization (JCVI) has announced that people aged 40 to 49 will be next for the vaccine.
He said taking an age-based approach would lead to better results in a shorter time.
“After groups 1 to 9 of phase 1, people aged 40 to 49 are the most exposed to the risk of hospitalization, the risk decreasing the younger you are. according to JCVI, who said evidence shows that an age-based approach is the most effective way to reduce infections and deaths.
“For Phase 2, the modeling studies also indicate that the speed of vaccine deployment is the most important factor in maximizing public health benefits against serious consequences.” the government agency said.
After the second priority group, people aged 30 to 39 and 18 to 29 will then be vaccinated.
Phase 2 will begin when all groups of people in phase 1 have been vaccinated, including the most vulnerable and people over 50 years of age.
Responding to criticism of why teachers and police will not be listed as a priority group, the JCVI said targeting professional groups would be “more complex to implement and could slow down the immunization program”. which would lead to an increase in vulnerable people. at a higher risk of being left out.
The Committee also described other groups at risk of hospitalization with the virus, including men, Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority (BAME) communities, those with BMIs over 30, and those living in poor area.
As of Friday, 8,523 people had a confirmed positive COVID-19 test and between February 20 and 26, a total of 67,816 people tested positive – a decrease of 16.8% from the last seven days.
There were 345 deaths reported in 28 days of testing positive for the virus on Thursday.
The death toll between February 20 and 26 is 2,496, a decrease of 31.3% from the previous week.
By the end of February 25, a total of 19,177,555 people had received their first dose of the vaccine and 736,037 were receiving the second. The vaccines are currently given in two doses 21 days apart.
The latest range R stands at 0.6-0.9, with a current growth rate of -6% to -3% per day.
The R number is a mechanism used to assess the ability of the virus to spread, where R is the number of people to whom an infected person will transmit the virus.
