The youth wing of the socio-cultural organization Apex Igbo, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, said on Monday that former military president Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, IBB, has put Nigerians on the right track as they search for the country’s next president.

Several politicians, including former vice president Atiku Abubakar, All Progressives Congress, APC, national leader Bola Tinubu, are seen as having ambitions to succeed incumbent Muhammdu Buhari.

But speaking to Arise TV, IBB said, “Nigerians need to watch out for candidates in their 60s who understand the nation’s deepest issues.”

Why I am not remarried yet – Ibrahim Babangida

“The next President of Nigeria must be a good Nigerian leader, must be a person who has traveled a lot through Nigeria, must be someone who has friends everywhere, must be well versed in economics.

“He must be a good politician, he should be able to ‘talk’ to Nigerians, he should be in his sixties and understand the deepest issues in the country.”

Reacting in a statement, OYC General Chairman Mazi Okwu Nnabuike said IBB had sent a clear signal to deceased politicians.

“We have always said that we are no longer going to allow expired politicians to run this country. We all witness how outgoing President Buhari has openly stated that his ability is limited by age.

“So we will no longer hand the fortunes of 200 million Nigerians into the hands of anyone whose age limit will be a form of barrier, and that is why we are in tune with IBB.”

“All the old politicians who are lining up to succeed Buhari should bury their ambition or the young people bury it for them.

“We need a young, dynamic, energetic and economically strong Nigerian to face the arduous task of repairing the already destroyed economic fortunes of this country,” the OYC said.

He added that in collaboration with other ethnic groups of young people, “we have started an aggressive search for a Nigerian who fits the above qualities, and very soon we will be unveiling such a person to Nigerians.”
