President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has started consultative meetings with ministers of state at Jubilee House to ensure they continue to be on track with his program for the second term.
The three-part meeting also includes a discussion of their budget needs ahead of the presentation of the 2022 budget statement and to assess their work program for the rest of the year.
Presidential communications director Eugene Arhin revealed this during a presidential press briefing at Jubilee House on Monday, September 27.
As of press time on Monday, President Akufo-Addo, who returned earlier today from a week-long trip to the United States for the 76th United Nations General Assembly, had met with 14 of his ministers.
These were the ministers of Trade and Industry, Energy, Employment and Labor Relations, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Public Enterprises, Youth and Sports, Local authorities, Decentralization and Rural Development, Chiefdom and Religious Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs.
Other ministers are expected to appear before the president today and tomorrow.
trip to the United States
Referring to the trip to the United States, Arhin said that in addition to addressing the global body, President Akufo-Addo had meetings with other world leaders on the sidelines.
They included the Vice President of the United States of America, Ms. Kamala Harris; the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mrs. Mia Mottley and the President of Guyana, Mr. Irfaan Ali.
He added that President Akufo-Addo also organized two fundraising events for the National Cathedral in New York and Houston and met with the director of the World Trade Organization, Ms. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
Mr. Arhin said the meeting with the head of the WTO focused on strengthening the African Continental Free Trade Area which is located in Ghana.
Ghana congratulated
The communications director said the US Vice President praised Ghana for entrenching its democratic credentials through the holding of free and fair elections in December 2020.
She praised President Akufo-Addo for creating a conducive business atmosphere in the country, which has led to significant levels of US investment in Ghana.
He said Ms Harris assured the US government was ready to expand its support for women-owned businesses in Ghana and small and medium-sized businesses.
Mr Arhin explained that during President Akufo-Addo’s meeting with the Prime Minister of Barbados, the two men agreed to make the necessary bilateral air service agreements and designate a carrier to fly between Accra and Bridgetown in order to ” open interpersonal relationships.
Mr. Arhin noted that another issue that was discussed was the possibility of increasing the number of Ghanaian nurses sent to Barbados.
He said the Prime Minister of Barbados indicated that the cultural similarity and widespread acceptance of the initial deployment of Ghanaian nurses to Barbados had been a good basis for developing this particular cooperation.
He said there was a demand for the possibility of sending Ghanaian doctors to Barbados.
Once again, President Akufo-Addo has indicated that he will put his ministers of health and transport in contact with the prime minister to continue discussions on the request.
Oil and gas
The President of Guyana, according to Mr. Arhin, requested Ghana’s technical assistance in the oil and gas sector, as well as support to the industry as a whole, while President Akufo-Addo also confirmed the need for both countries to establish a framework for technical consultation.
He said President Akufo-Addo assured that Ghana has the required capacity for Guyanese interns in the oil and gas industry.
New regions
Mr Arhin said that President Akufo-Addo, who had visited 12 of the 16 regions during this year, was “extremely pleased” with what was happening in the newly created regions, especially with the massive development of infrastructure.
He said that in fulfillment of his promise to spread development in the newly created regions, the regional offices and directorates of various government agencies were spread across various cities in the regions instead of concentrating all infrastructure in the regional capital.
