President cuts grass for redevelopment of Kumasi Central Market

Kumasi, May 02, GNA – President Nana Addo
Dankwa Akufo-Addo, cut the grbad for the start of the redevelopment works of
the central market of Kumasi, the largest open space market in West Africa.

At an impressive ceremony in Kejetia, the
Central business center of Kumasi, the president was badisted by Asantehene,
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the British High Commissioner, Mr. Iain Walker.

The project is the second part of the
project in two phases. The first part, which concerned the renovation of Kejetia's activity
the enclave, has already been completed with a total of 8,400 shops and other
facilities.

The € 248 million project would be
executed by MM. Contracta Construction Limited, United Kingdom (UK).

It should be finished in the 48
months and, once built, would bring the market facilities to the standard
in line with the government's program to improve infrastructure development

President Akufo-Addo said the redeveloped
market would have more than six thousand rented commercial spaces, including
5,000 lockable stores, kiosks, restaurants and a waste treatment plant.

Other facilities include police and firefighters
stations, post office and recreation facilities.

He affirmed the government's determination to stem
the perennial fire badociated with the old market, which was booming
existence since the late 1800s.

The President hoped that the new market
would go a long way to solving congestion in the central business district,
while facilitating commercial activities.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu in a brief message underlined
the need for facility managers to exercise due diligence in the
project as planned.

Hajia Alima Mahama, Minister of the Locals
Government and Rural Development, said that the project would add to the many
programs put in place by the Government to develop the development of
Infrastructure.
