The district chairman of the ruling nuclear power plant in Fomena in the Ashanti region Akwasi Nti Asamoah has announced his resignation for health reasons.

This was in a letter addressed to the party base, including President Akufo-Addo.

In the letter seen by dailymailgh.com, Akwasi Nti said his decision followed advice from medical professionals to “take time off from active politics.”

Having served the party in various roles, the mainstay of the NPP believes it is time to make room for others to do the same.

“Despite my resignation, I want to give the firmest assurance that I will continue to support the party in all capacities and that I will make it possible in the consolidation of the gains since the formation of the NPP”, he wrote.

“It has been a great honor to serve my people and the great elephant family,” he added.

Mr. Akwasi Nti Asamoah joined the NPP in 1992 as a parish youth organizer. He later rose through the ranks of a ward president, a district youth organizer and was later elected president.

Ahead of the 2020 election, he was accused of plotting to overthrow incumbent Andrew Amoako Asiamah.

Mr. Asiamah, following the protracted disagreement with the Fomena constituency president and other NPP constituency leaders, dropped out of the party to run as an independent parliamentary candidate.

The decision moved the NPP leadership from Accra to Fomena, including President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to ask them to overturn their decision so that the NPP-selected candidate, Philip Ofori-Asante, could challenge the election without contest.

However, the intervention of the party leader did not prevent Andrew Amoako Asiamah from running for the seat of Fomena in the legislative elections of 2020.

He polled twelve thousand eight hundred and five (12,805) votes, defeating the NPP candidate, Mr. Philip Ofori-Asante, who collected ten thousand seven hundred and ninety-eight (10,798) valid votes cast.

NDC candidate Christina Ama Ranson received 2,608 votes and another candidate Eric Appiagyei also polled one hundred and fifty-eight (158) of the total valid votes cast. The total number of votes cast was 26,616, with 26,369 being valid votes cast and 247 being rejected.
