Malawi President Peter Mutharika was re-elected for a second term with 38.5% of the vote.

The outgoing leader, aged 78, had to face stiff competition in the May 21 elections, especially from his deputy.

The result was announced Monday after the lifting of an injunction ordered by the country's high court.

The Challenger Lazarus Chakwera, who finished second, had sought to delay the announcement due to concerns about voting irregularities.

The elections were considered one of the most unpredictable elections in the country.

Malawi Electoral Commission Chair Jane Ansah called for calm on the outcome.
