Seychelles President Danny Faure announced on Monday that he will run in presidential elections in 2020.

"It is with great humility that I inform the Seychellois people of my decision to run for next year's presidential election," Faure said in a public speech, according to a statement from the presidency.

Aged 57, he took office in 2016 after his predecessor's resignation as a result of a crushing defeat in the legislative elections for the ruling party for four decades.

Faure also announced that the archipelago nation would hold a referendum before the elections to determine whether citizens residing abroad should be allowed to vote.

The country 's current constitution, which is three decades old, does not allow residents abroad to vote, an issue that, according to Faure, has sparked much debate.

"As a people, we must make a decision on this, to ensure that the constitution and electoral laws reflect what the Seychellois want," he said.

He said that he would ask the electoral commission to set a date for the elections within seven days from Tuesday.

Seychelles has about 115 islands and tourism is one of the main drivers of an economy with Africa's highest gross domestic product per capita.
