The president of Zimbabwe, whose country is going through the worst economic crisis of his decade, is going to Russia in the hope of getting long-term loans.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday in the tumult of Zimbabwe caused by the severe economic downturn and protests against fuel price increases in which five people were killed. This is the worst unrest in Zimbabwe since the deadly post-election violence in August.
Before meeting Putin, Mnangagwa told the state news agency RIA Novosti that he would ask for Russian loans, but he did not specify how much his country wanted to borrow. He also said that Zimbabwe would like Russian companies to explore gas and oil.
Mnangagwa also plans to attend the World Economic Forum in Switzerland next week to encourage international investment.
