The ad appeared in the Monday edition of the Daily News, a leading English newspaper in Tanzania, and read: “Board of Directors, management and staff of State Mining Corporation (STAMICO) join to his fellow Tanzanians for mourning the death of HE President Samia Suluhu Hassan for being sworn in as the 6th President of the United Republic of Tanzania. “
Officials of Tanzania Standard Newspapers (TSN), the editors of the Daily News, said they took action against three staff for “failing to ensure quality control of the advertisements”.
In a statement released Monday by the Daily News, the newspaper said it “deeply regrets” the error.
“We sincerely apologize to His Excellency the President of the United Republic of Tanzania and deeply regret the inconvenience caused by this error. The corrected version and the apology will be republished tomorrow, March 30, 2021.”
SN’s management announced the suspension of its acting head of advertising, Anitha Shayo, and its head of reception and customer service, Rajab Juma Mohamed, pending the outcome of an investigation.
The company also canceled its contract with freelance sales writer Lameck Samson.
Tanzanian lawyer Rugemeleza Nshala told CNN on Tuesday that the advertising error was due to “the incompetence of the country’s state media”.
“The government must ensure that its media houses are professionally managed, so that we do not continue to experience these kinds of shoddy jobs … embarrassing advertisements,” added Nshala, who heads Tanganyika. Law Society.
