Lucas Joao missed a late penalty as Reading was held to a 0-0 draw by Preston at Deepdale.
The Royals would have moved up to fourth, tied on points with second-placed Swansea in the championship if they had won, but Joao shot off the post for 12 yards with seven minutes left.
In a lackluster game in the final third, Emil Riis had Preston’s best chance saved by Rafael shortly before the break and John Swift went close twice with free kicks for Reading.
The result leaves Preston in 10th place, six points out of play-offs after playing one game more than most, while Veljko Paunovic’s men remain in fifth.
And after?
Reading is next in action on Friday 29 January, as they host Bournemouth at Madejski Stadium at 8 p.m. – in a match live on Sky Sports Football – while Preston travel to Hillsborough to face Sheffield on Wednesday at 3 p.m. the following day .
