In his first three episodes, Pretty Little Liars: Perfectionists scattered a handful of bread crumbs on the relationship between Alison and Emily. Wednesday, we had all the bread.
RELATED STORIES
It started when Alison saw a picture of Emily with their twin girls on Instagram and noticed that she was no longer wearing her ring. When Ali admitted that she was perhaps not above Emily, Mona asked what she was expecting when she would move through the country to work at Beacon Heights University.
"I convinced myself that I came here with a clean slate, that I could prove to Emily that I can lead a life of trust, maybe win her back," said Alison. "But I realize the truth is that it was too hard to be there, close to her, knowing we would not be together." From there, Mona deduces, "I think you've moved on, Alison, you never said that out loud.
The failed relationship between Alison and Emily was evoked a second time during the conversation between Ali and Caitlin, when she gave her pupil the following advice on the importance of telling the truth: "I can not, in all conscience, tell you to lie to someone you love. A relationship is built on trust. I've been to your place and I've lied. It ruined us, but keeping her safe was more important to me.
Then came the real doozy: After apologizing to Emily for not calling back, "this last step was difficult," Alison poked a glbad of wine and signed Emily's divorce papers. Not only was Emily on the list of "applicants", which meant that she had commenced the divorce proceedings, but the reason for the split was that "this marriage is irrevocably broken".
After giving her papers to Jane Hanbad, Alison removed her wedding band, the last step to accept that her marriage to Emily was officially over.
"Emison" fans, how are you? Were you surprised to see Alison sign the divorce papers, or was it inevitable? (And am I the only one who does not know they are really married?) Whatever you think, drop it in a comment below.
