Prince Charles will officially open on Monday the largest offshore wind farm in Scotland.
The world's fourth wind farm, the Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm, is located 13 kilometers from the Caithness coast in northern Scotland.
It has 84 turbines and will produce enough renewable energy to power 450,000 homes a year, according to the SSE Energy Company.
SSE holds 40% of the Beatrice project. Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Red Rock Power Limited hold respective shares of 35% and 25%.
By 2030, the Scottish Government says it wants to produce half of the country 's energy consumption from renewable energy sources. It is also targeting a decarbonized energy system "almost completely" by 2050.
Wind turbines in Scotland generated 9,831,320 megawatt hours between January and June 2019, according to WWF Scotland.
The figures provided by WeatherEnergy mean that Scottish wind power produced enough electricity to power the equivalent of 4.47 million homes for six months. That's almost double the number of homes in Scotland, according to the WWF Scotland.
Overall, Europe is home to some of the world 's most ambitious wind energy projects. In September 2018, for example, the offshore Walney Extension offshore wind farm in Ireland was officially inaugurated.
With a total capacity of 659 MW, it is currently the largest operational offshore wind farm in the world and able to power nearly 600,000 homes in the UK, according to the Danish energy company Orsted .
