A shocking television documentary claimed that Prince Charles was trying to get Prince Andrew out of the royal family. The show The Royal Family At War, broadcast Saturday on Channel 5, traces the complex relationship between the Prince of Wales and the Duke of York. Prince Charles worries about the possibility of "ruining the legacy of the Queen".
Prince Charles also wants a "lite" monarchy when he becomes king.
This would mean that only the immediate family would be funded by the taxpayer.
The prince's plan to "focus the public on the core of the royal family" means that Prince Andrew and his daughters Beatrice and Eugenie have no place, according to the biographer of Queen Ingrid Seward.
But in the documentary, Prince Charles is also worried about Prince Andrew's public image as a result of several public scandals.
These include his friendship with a disgraced billionaire and his reputation as Airmiles Andy.
Royal biographer Penny Junor said: "Charles is worried that Andrew's behavior sometimes harms the family business."
Royal commentator Victoria Arbiter said, "There have probably been occasions when Prince Charles considered Andrew a handicap to the royal family.
"This image of Prince Andrew is Prince Charles's playboy. He finds it embarrbading.
"She goes on to suggest that, in order to follow in the footsteps of his mother, Charles must avoid any further scandals and keep out the most problematic members of the royal family.
"Charles does not want to be responsible for the ruin of the Queen's legacy."
Dickie Arbiter, former Queen's press officer, said Prince Charles would be wary of his brother after using the Royal Helicopter to go golfing in Scotland.
He said, "That would probably have affected the Prince of Wales because he firmly believes that when you use public funds, you do the work and go home, you do not have time to play.
"If you want to play, you do it quite separately and you pay for it."
