Prince Harry opens up about the death of his mother, Princess Diana, in hopes of helping the children cope with their own loss.
The Duke of Sussex revealed details of his enduring grief in a foreword to the upcoming book ‘Hospital by the Hill’ written by Chris Connaughton and illustrated by Fay Troote. In the foreword, Harry reflects on the loss he suffered 23 years ago after his mother’s tragic death when he was just 12 years old.
“If you are reading this book, it is because you have lost your parent or loved one, and while I wish I could have hugged you now, I hope this story can take some comfort in knowing that you are not alone, ”he wrote in the foreword, obtained by TODAY. “When I was a young boy, I lost my mother. At the time, I didn’t want to believe it or accept it, and it left a huge hole in me. I know how you feel and I want to assure you that in time this hole will be filled with love and support. “
He went on to write, “We all face loss in a different way, but when a parent goes to Heaven, I’ve been told that their spirit, their love and the memories of them don’t.
“They are always with you and you can keep them forever,” he said. “I find it to be true.”
He added: “Now, I never met them, but I know that this person was special to you, and he was someone incredibly kind, caring and loving because of where they chose to be. to work.”
The book, which will be published to mark the UK’s National Day of Reflection on March 23, tells the story of a young man who has to come to terms with the loss of his mother, a frontline worker in a hospital. It addresses topics such as bereavement and is published with the aim of helping children or youth who have lost loved ones to COVID-19 during the pandemic.
“Helping others is one of the most important things anyone can do,” the foreword continued. “You can feel lonely, you can feel sad, you can feel angry, you can feel bad. This feeling will pass. And I’ll make you a promise – you’ll feel better and stronger once you’re ready to talk about how you feel.
The book will be provided free of charge to any child or young person in the UK who has been affected by these events, according to a press release.
Harry ended on an optimistic note, writing: “I hope this book helps you remember how special your parent or loved one was. And how special you are too. “
Over the years, Harry and Prince William have been outspoken about their grief after losing their mother at 12 and 15, respectively.
In the BBC One documentary “Football, Prince William and Our Mental Health” aired in May 2020, William said not having his mother was “sometimes overwhelming”.
“When you’ve been through something traumatic in life, that is, your dad wasn’t there, my mom dying when I was younger, your emotions come back in leaps and bounds because it’s is a very different phase of life, and there is no one there to help you, ”he explained.
In October 2019, Harry described his mother’s death as “a cleansing wound” in the ITV documentary “Harry & Meghan: An African Journey”.
“I think being part of this family, in this role, in this job, every time I see a camera, every time I hear a click, every time I see a flash, it brings me back right away” , he explained. “So in that regard, it’s the worst reminder of his life, as opposed to the best.”
