Priyanka Chopra Jonas told Sky News that she is determined to bring South Asian stories to Hollywood.
The actress and activist spoke about the representation on the big screen ahead of the release of her new film, The White Tiger, based on the novel by Aravind Adiga, winner of the Man Booker Prize in 2008.
It tells the story of Balram Halwai (played by newcomer Adarsh Gourav), who chronicles his humorous but somber rise from poor villager to successful entrepreneur in modern India.
Reviews before the film’s release were strong and it was touted as a possible outside Oscar contender.
After Balram’s journey to become a driver for a wealthy couple, Ashok (Rajkummar Rao) and Pinky (Chopra Jonas) who returned from the United States to India, it highlights the huge gap in the country’s class system.
Chopra Jonas, who is also an executive producer on the film, says it’s the kind of story we need to see more of on screen.
“I ran after this movie, actually I read it on Twitter,” she told Sky News. “I read this book about ten years ago. I was very excited and deeply moved by this one, so when I read the fact that it was being directed by Netflix, I asked my agents to call the producers and offer my services.
“Pinky as a part really developed in the movie but I really wanted to be an EP (executive producer) to offer my support. And my belief is that I can bring South Asian stories to Hollywood.
“We don’t see enough representation in global entertainment, given that we are one-fifth of the world’s population. So I was very, very happy to offer my support for this film.”
In the film, Balram makes himself indispensable to Ashok and Pinky, the will to serve deeply ingrained – but when an act of betrayal truly causes him to begin to see the unequal system for what it is, he becomes determined to stand up, whatever the cost.
Chopra Jonas, a former Miss World who won the contest in 2000, is one of India’s biggest stars. She says she hopes the story makes people watching the movie think about the privilege.
“I think it’s a self-reflective film for the privileged to think about the rest of the world living in a completely different situation,” she said.

One spectator who is already a fan of the film is her husband, singer Nick Jonas. The couple got married in a lavish ceremony in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, in 2018.
After seeing a preview, Jonas posted on Instagram to say that the film was “unreal” and that his wife’s performance was “outstanding”.
When asked if her husband is her biggest supporter, Chopra Jonas said, “Well, I would like to believe this family is doing this for each other. He loves this movie, though. He’s a really big one. fan of the film, I must say. “
