Priyanka Chopra Jonas told Sky News that she is determined to bring South Asian stories to Hollywood.

The actress and activist spoke about the representation on the big screen ahead of the release of her new film, The White Tiger, based on the novel by Aravind Adiga, winner of the Man Booker Prize in 2008.

It tells the story of Balram Halwai (played by newcomer Adarsh ​​Gourav), who chronicles his humorous but somber rise from poor villager to successful entrepreneur in modern India.

“I ran after this movie, actually I read it on Twitter,” she told Sky News. “I read this book about ten years ago. I was very excited and deeply moved by this one, so when I read the fact that it was being directed by Netflix, I asked my agents to call the producers and offer my services.

“Pinky as a part really developed in the movie but I really wanted to be an EP (executive producer) to offer my support. And my belief is that I can bring South Asian stories to Hollywood.

“We don’t see enough representation in global entertainment, given that we are one-fifth of the world’s population. So I was very, very happy to offer my support for this film.”
