A prison sentence and a ban on active politics in the country for ten years await leaders of political parties that support the activities of self-defense groups.

Vigilance has been the scourge of Ghanaian politics and has been frowned upon by civil society organizations, churches and the majority of Ghanaians who have called on political parties affiliated with these groups to disband them.

In an attempt to address the threat of vigilance, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo called on the two main parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to disband these groups.

The fact that the parties did not do so forced the president to present to Parliament a bill to ban the activities of political party militias, which is currently under review.

Majority leader Mr. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, speaking at a stakeholder forum on policy monetization in Ghana on Monday, July 8, 2019, expressed his optimism as to the fact that the bill will be pbaded by the House today, Tuesday, July 9, 2019, in order to eliminate vigilance. in Ghana's body politics.

He said politicians who encourage militia could face jail time and a ban on politics for a decade.

"What we intend to do, is even identify the political parties that host these self-defense groups. The leaders of this political party will face the law and we intend to imprison them for hosting such a self-defense group within their party. After serving their sentence, it will take at least 10 years to return to politics. ", Said Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.
