The University of Ghana, Legon has announced that Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo has been appointed acting vice-chancellor of the school.
His appointment takes effect from August 1, 2021.
“The academic community is hereby informed that the newly constituted University of Ghana Council has decided to appoint Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Pro-Vice-Chancellor responsible for Academic and Student Affairs, to act as vice-chancellor. Chancellor of the University of Ghana with effective August 1, 2021, until the university council appoints a substantial vice-chancellor, ”said a statement signed by UG Registrar Mercy Haizel-Ashia .
He adds: “In a brief meeting after the inauguration of the new Board, the Board considered section 10 (2Xb) of the University of Ghana Act 2010 (Act 806) and section 6 (3) of the statutes of the University of Ghana, and decided on the appointment of the dean of the two pro vice-chancellors, to act.
Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, with this appointment, becomes the first woman to hold the post of Vice-Chancellor in the history of the renowned higher education institution.
In her previous role at school, the 49-year-old excelled as pro-vice-chancellor in charge of academic and student affairs (ASA).

Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo is a former student of the University of Ghana.
She was educated at Holy Child School and Archbishop Porter Girls’ Secondary School, and continued her education at the University of Ghana from 1991 to 1996 to earn a BA in French and Linguistics. .
His MPhil (2001) and his doctorate. (2007) Degrees in Linguistics are from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, Norway.
Professor Amfo received additional training in higher education management and leadership from Harvard Business School, University of Applied Sciences, Germany, and INSEAD, France.
Professor Amfo’s academic career began in 2001 as a lecturer in the Department of Linguistics, was promoted to Lecturer in 2007, Associate Professor in 2011 and Professor in 2017.
His research interests focus on the linguistic sub-discipline of pragmatics, which allows him to explore the role that context plays in conversational interactions and how this influences communication in different domains.
Prior to her appointment as Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Amfo was Dean of the School of Languages, having served as Head of the Linguistics Department from 2013 to 2014.
She has participated in the governance of the University of Ghana by serving on several statutory and ad hoc boards and committees.
Professor Amfo is currently an advisory board member of the Coalition of People Against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence and Harmful Practices (CoPASH) – a program supported by UNFPA.
She is a member of several professional associations including the Society of Communication, Medicine and Ethics, International Pragmatics Association (where she sits on its advisory board; the first African to hold this position since the Association was created in 1986); West African Linguistic Society and Ghana Linguistics Association (where she was president from 2010 to 2014); a pioneering researcher, principal investigator and chair of the African Humanities Program Steering Committee of the American Council of Learned Societies.
She is also a member of the German Academic Exchange Services (DAAD), Commonwealth Professional.
