Textured soy protein is a healthy, high quality protein source that contains all the essential amino acids for growth. It comes without fat, cholesterol and with little or no saturated fat.
Already, caterers participating in the program have been introduced to the use of the textured soy product, produced locally by YEDENT.
According to Ms. Quarshigah, the TSP, for example, was more affordable and more convenient to use for caterers, compared to chicken or fish.
"One kilo of textured soy protein sells to GH₵20 or GH₵25 and it can be used to cook for more than 100 children. So, if you buy, say 10 kilos of soy, you can use it to cook for over 1000 kids. This means that caterers with a high number of children will benefit greatly from the use of TSP and may even mix it with eggs and vegetables to make it nutritionally balanced. with any accompaniment like banku, rice, yam, plantain or eba, "she said.
Dr. Quashigah stated that her priority is to make sure that children are at the heart of all activities of the school feeding program.
The nutrition specialist also advised caterers to refrain from using only tomatoes and onion stew to serve the children, which, according to her practice, is suicidal for growth. students.
