In August, Image Comics will digitally release a number of works owned by critically acclaimed writer Kurt Busiek, including Astro City.
This August, Picture comics will release acclaimed writer that of Kurt Busiek creator-owned projects in new digital editions. In addition to extensive work for Marvel and DC, Busiek has a large body of creator-owned work spanning multiple genres, and starting August 4 these books will be available digitally on Comixology, followed by Apple Books and from Google Play at a later date. Kurt Busiek has been writing comics since the early 1980s and became a superstar with the 1993s. Wonders. Featuring art entirely painted by Alex Ross, wonders was unlike anything published at the time and made a name for both creators. Busiek would follow with notable runs on Spider Man and the Avengers for Marvel, Aquaman to DC, and Conan the Barbarian at Cheval Noir. While innovating at Marvel and DC, he worked with some of the best comic book artists on projects owned by creators that did not fall under the Big Two. Some of this work has been out of print for some time, but thanks to Image Comics, fans who want to read these titles will now be able to access it.
Image Comics sent out a press release detailing the headlines. The first of these is City of Astro, a book that some argue is Busiek’s true masterpiece. A layered and nuanced approach to the superhero genre, City of Astro has won several industry awards. Other books include the fantasy series Black-smith and The sorcerer’s tale; science fiction shock rockets; and Superstar: As Seen on TV, the story of a superhero whose power levels depend on his popularity. Busiek collaborated with leading artists on these projects, including Ross (who helped design Astro City), Carlos Pacheco, David Thorn Wenzel, Stuart Immonen and Wade Von Grawbadger. Many of these books were originally published by WildStorm, which was once part of Image before it was acquired by DC.
All of Busiek’s work in the superhero genre, on books such as wonders, could single-handedly cement its reputation, but these astonishing titles are complemented by an equally astonishing body of works owned by creators. What’s really impressive is that Busiek has reach: these books come from various genres, such as the Black-smith on the sci-fi adventure of Shock rockets then go back to superheroes with Super star and City of Astro. Busiek is “delighted” to reprint these works, citing reader demand. Plus, Busiek teased New projects were also arriving but were not developed further.
“I’m excited to consolidate my designer-owned books at Image,” Busiek said in the Image announcement. “Readers have asked us to make these stories available again, so we’re happy to finally have them all together and in good company with the rest of the Image line. This is just the beginning too, there will be some new material coming as well, but that will be another announcement for another day.
In August, fans eager to delve into that of Kurt Busiek titles owned by creators will finally be able to do so thanks to new digital editions from Picture comics, and it’s also the perfect opportunity for longtime aficionados to revisit their favorite characters and worlds.
