The first chemical elements appeared just after the Big Bang were mainly hydrogen or deuterium and helium, as well as traces of lithium. Much later, the first stars were formed and the current variety of elements heavier. But even before, when the cooling universe allowed for the first time chemical reactions after the Big Bang, a first molecule, that is to say particles of two or more atoms, had to be formed at from existing substances. This molecule represents, so to speak, the birth of chemistry in the universe.
