Psychiatrists are encouraged to take into account the impact of using social media on all children that they evaluate for mental health issues

Psychiatrists are advised to take into account the impact of using social media on all children that they evaluate for mental health issues.

In an unprecedented initiative, the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCP) stated that issues relating to the use of technology should be part of routine badessments of mental health, in order to ensure that clinicians "follow" the evolution of digital technology.

Harmful online content, such as self-injury images or eating disorders, could impact an existing mental illness, with some kids copying the damaging behavior of their peers online.

The calls come as concerns are raised about the possible links between harmful content, excessive online time, and poor mental health.

Earlier this month, MPs suggested clbadifying social media addiction in the new stringent regulations aimed at protecting children from companies operating in a "Wild West Online".

The government should announce its intention to create an independent regulator that would implement a new code of conduct under the Social Media Business Act – approved by the SmPC.

The RCP has also publicly called on social media companies to help fund new research on the links between the use of technology and mental illness.

Dr. Bernadka Dubicka, CPR Chair of Children and Youth, said, "While we recognize that social media and technology are not the main drivers of youth mental illness, we know that it's a good thing. they are an important part of their lives and can be harmful in some situations.

"As a front-line clinician, I regularly see young people who deliberately hurt themselves after discussing self-injury techniques online.

"Clinicians recognize the well-known phenomenon of young people copying their harmful behaviors when they are hospitalized, but it is even more worrying to see this replicated in the online world, where the audience is so much larger."

Dr. Dubicka stated that some youth reported having recommended harmful content, such as links to websites encouraging weight loss or self-harm, after searching for or clicking on similar content once. before.

"It is extremely important that as clinicians we determine whether social media has an impact on the mental health of the children and young people we treat, so that we can try to quickly treat any other cause of their distress. mentally, "she added.

Emma Thomas, CEO of YoungMinds, welcomed the recommendations, saying social media can "make things worse" with the problems children and youth are already struggling with.

"Some young people say that sharing their experiences of self-destruction, eating disorders or committing suicide on social networks is an important way to find support," she said.

"They are part of a community that introduces them to new ways of self-harm or encourages eating disorders, which can have a devastating impact.

"That's why we would like the government to impose on young users a duty of care to all social media companies, as well as an independent regulator to ensure that businesses take action to prevent and reduce online damage." on their platforms. "

Professor Wendy Burn, RCP Chair, said, "Digital technology is evolving rapidly and we need to make sure clinicians are following the evolution of the situation.
