CRÊME PHILADELPHIA – Philadelphia officials have declared a public health emergency due to a continuing outbreak of hepatitis A.
Health care providers have been asked to help vaccinate those most at risk of infection to halt the epidemic.
The health department says the city usually sees between two and six cases of hepatitis A a year. Since January, the department has been informed of 154 cases.
Hepatitis A is a liver infection caused by a virus that is transmitted through the fecal-oral route, either through personal contact or through the consumption of contaminated food or water.
This is particularly dangerous for the elderly and those with underlying liver disease.
