Health officials confirm measles case in Vancouver
Measles is an extremely contagious disease that spreads easily through the air
One person was treated for measles in the Lower Mainland, confirmed the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority.
A spokesman for the health authority told Black Press Media that VCH's chief medical officer, Dr. Patricial Daly, had been informed of the person's diagnosis on Friday.
No public notification was sent regarding the confirmed case, said the spokesperson, because the person was no longer contagious and therefore presented no risk to the public.
Measles is a serious illness that spreads easily in the air when an infected person breathes, coughs or sneezes. The measles virus can survive for several hours in small droplets. The aerial spread of the measles virus makes the disease highly contagious.
Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose and red, inflamed eyes, usually appearing seven to 14 days after the initial exposure. These are followed three to seven days later by a rash that lasts for at least three days.
If you think you have measles, health officials urge you to call your doctor.
