Health officials in Vermont said there were about 20 influenza outbreaks this season across the country and they expected the number to increase.

State epidemiologist Patsy Kelso said that a recent increase in the number of influenza cases was typical and that it would likely continue over the next few weeks. The Vermont Public Radio reports that the latest figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that about 10 million people in the country have been ill with the flu this season.

According to Kelso, the flu season usually peaks in February or March. According to Kelso, people who want to avoid the flu should wash their hands, cover their cough and get vaccinated.
