Students now have the opportunity to join the new Master of Public Health (MPH) program in early fall of 2019 on the El Centro campus of Northeastern Illinois University. Through a wide range of current and future topics and activities in the region, the program offers the opportunity to pursue degrees in behavioral science, epidemiology or environmental health, as well as related laws and policies. health, health administration and health communication.
Dean of the College of Graduate Studies and Research, Michael Stern, has helped to make the program a reality since its inception in 2014. He said the bachelor's degree in community health was growing fast because people were interested. "The field is growing and there are many potential careers and opportunities to explore," Stern said.
In order to prepare students to lead, conduct research and serve collaborative public health efforts, the 42-credit MPH will utilize a general and interdisciplinary approach, through clbadroom and online learning.
Jennifer Banas, badociate professor and coordinator of the Community Health Program, said the faculty would encourage students to take elective courses in other programs. "If I'm interested in developing health human resources, I could take my courses in this segment, adapting my master's degree to my interests and my professional goals," said Banas.
The MPH wants to prepare them for public and private careers, such as health researcher, community health worker, health communication specialist, public health badyst and public health policy administrator.
As said James Ball, chair of the department of health sciences and physical education, this is possible because the faculty is ready to teach them these different aspects. "This will benefit students as teachers from all departments help them. We all have a wealth of experience in different areas of the profession, so it's very positive, "said Ball.
The new program will focus on marginalized communities, paying particular attention to intersections experienced by people, including race, ethnicity, gender and age. As a result, students will explore areas of research, apply for internships, collaborate in public health environments, and improve their resumes. Applicants must have a minimum of 3.0 GPA in a major related to Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Environmental Health Science, Health Administration, Behavioral Sciences or Science. social. They will be required to submit two letters of reference and a text explaining what public health means to them, which parts they are interested in and how a master's degree in public health will contribute to the achievement of their career goals.
