The Hamilton Public Health Center has issued another alert regarding purple heroin.

The latest alert was launched Friday the day after half a dozen overdoses probably attributed to the drug over a 24-hour period.

Purple heroin is a highly toxic heroin that can cause immediate loss of consciousness, speech disorders and, in the worst case, death, said Hamilton Public Health in a statement.

Even a small amount can cause an overdose, HPH added.

"This is an important reminder to the community that drugs such as fentanyl continue to be reduced," the statement said.

The city had already issued similar alerts in June and March 2018, in September and March 2017 and in December 2016.
