Tamale North MP Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini has called for tougher penalties for the Assin Central MP for his unparliamentary conduct by threatening a journalist for performing his normal duties.
According to him, an apology from the MP will not be enough to repair the damage done to the august Chamber of Parliament.
Speaking to Joy FM on Friday, July 16, Suhuyini said that the MP’s recent actions have really damaged Parliament and that Kennedy Agyapong has to face the music for it.
“I am for a certain level of punishment, especially when he (Kennedy Agyapong) is not a first-time offender. This is a person who has already been referred to the committee. The Committee, in fact, declared him guilty and recommended some sanctions, of which the house had to decide which sanction to apply.
“Unfortunately, former Speaker of Parliament Mike Oquaye never proposed to the House to make a decision on the type of punishment that was commensurate with the offense he was convicted of at the time. I am very sure that I am not the only one to have this point of view, ”explained Suhuyini.
Alhassan Suhuyini called on the House on Tuesday to take drastic action against the MP.
Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin then referred Kennedy Agyapong to the Privileges Committee.
Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Police Command said it has opened investigations into alleged threats to the life of Erastus Asare Donkor by Kennedy Agyapong.
A statement issued by the Police Command, signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) David Agyeman Adjem, and copied by the Ghanaian News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi, said: “The petition is attracting attention “.
The suspected threat “is under investigation by the regional crime officer and any new development will be communicated,” the statement said.
Police said they were committed to protecting everyone in the Region, stressing that authorities remain committed to this path.
“Let the police investigate the case and not ignite the passion, and make comments that could ultimately mar the investigations,” the statement warned.
