QM215: Qualcomm plans new processor for extremely cheap smartphones

The US chip maker Qualcomm is apparently working on a new, more cost-effective platform for entry-level smartphones, on the one hand, which wants to serve the Android Go program, but on the other, wants to strengthen the market position still unexploited.

In the import / export databases and Qualcomm's proprietary development platforms, a new ARM platform called Qualcomm QM215 has appeared for several weeks. It should be noted that we do without the so-called "S" in the SoC Snapdragon model number, so that Qualcomm wants to market the new chip outside the Snapdragon series. One of the reasons could be the concentration on the lowest funds in the market.

Old refurbished base

Until now, relatively little is known, but it seems to be a quad-core chip with a 1.3 GHz processor clock and a fast 650 megahertz graphics unit. As the QM215 is also closely related to Snapdragon 410 and Snapdragon 425, you will probably use the basics of these older SoCs and provide them with updated device technology such as a faster modem and so on.

Reference smartphones already available

Qualcomm is already testing reference designs for smartphones with the new QM215, and we already know that at least one renowned smartphone maker is also developing a matching device. The Qualcomm development kits are each equipped with one or two gigabytes of LPDDR3 memory and eight or 16 gigabytes of internal flash memory.

Plus, the devices feature an LCD screen with a resolution called HD +, which is therefore probably at least 1440×720 pixels. In addition, a fingerprint reader already known on several smartphones (such as Huawei) would allow a quick and largely secure unlock of future low-end smartphones.

Currently, the new SoC is difficult to categorize, but it could be marketed as the Qualcomm Mobile 215 Platform. Tests done on devices with such a low memory suggest that they actually wish to lay the foundation for a new generation of low-cost smartphones – to be more competitive in markets such as smartphones. 39, India, South America and Africa with other chip vendors, such as MediaTek.
