The new Facebook Watch series "Queen America" is set in the controversial world of appearance, and star Catherine Zeta-Jones is clearly aware of her ups and downs.
"Yes, there is a preconceived notion of what is the world of historical spectacle," said Zeta-Jones at the Variety Sponsored world premiere of "Queen America".
"I started out as a tap dancer, so I understand what it means to improve and progress, and what it takes for women who come from somewhere to go somewhere else." Zeta-Jones added.
The series takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She follows the character of Zeta-Jones, Vicki Ellis – a reputed and difficult contest coach whose mission in life is to transform young women into historical re-enactors – and her young protégé, Samantha. The series of 10 episodes seeks to highlight not only the flaws and humor of the world of competitions, but also the way in which it offers opportunities to girls who would not otherwise have access.
"I grew up in Tulsa … I've known so many girls that [pageants] does incredible things for, "said the show creator Meaghan Oppenheimer. "Girls who were able to pay for their university education, those who were in foster care and participated in competitions were a way forward for them. There are a lot of negative things about [pageant] I did not want to let anyone down for that, but there are a lot of girls I've talked to, interviewed, who are very grateful for the pageants. "
With Zeta-Jones, Belle Shouse, Isabella Amara and Victoria Justice, the new episodes of "Queen America" are aired weekly on Facebook Watch.
