From the pioneer, award-winning writer Emmy, Lena Waithe (Netflix's mistress of anything) and Melina Matsoukas, visionary director of some of the most powerful experiences of this generation's pop culture, including the "Training" campaign Beyonce's and the Nike "Equality" campaign, stems from Makeready's new drama, Queen & Slim.
At a first forgotten rendezvous in Ohio, a black man (Daniel Kaluuya of Get Out) and a black woman (Jodie Turner-Smith, in his first role in a feature film), are arrested for a crime of Traffic Laws. The situation degenerates into dramatic and sudden consequences when the man kills the policeman in self-defense. Terrified and fearful for their lives, the man, a retail employee, and the woman, a defense lawyer, are forced to flee. But the incident is recorded on video and becomes viral, and the couple unwittingly becomes a symbol of trauma, terror, grief and pain for the country's inhabitants.
As they conduct themselves, these two unlikely fugitives will discover and meet in the most terrible and desperate circumstances, and will forge a deep and powerful love that will reveal their common humanity and shape the rest of their lives.
Waithe produced the film via his company Hillman Grad Productions, with Matsoukas via his production company De La Revolución Films. Frey produces via its production company 3BlackDot, alongside Andrew Coles and Michelle Knudsen.
Queen & Slim is funded by Makeready and will be distributed by Universal Pictures worldwide, with eOne processing distribution in select territories, including the United Kingdom and Canada.
