New Delhi, April 21 (ANI): A recent study states that smoking during pregnancy can have adverse health effects. According to the researchers, smoking during pregnancy can result in low birth weight, delayed intrauterine development, premature birth, infant mortality, and long-term developmental delays. The details have been published in the Journal of JAMA Network Open. "However, given the substantial benefits of quitting during pregnancy, the proportion of smokers who quit before pregnancy has remained virtually stagnant since 2011," says lead author Samir Soneji. The investigators sought to badess the likelihood of premature delivery in pregnant women who smoked before pregnancy and who quit smoking at the beginning or during pregnancy. With the help of data, the researchers conducted a cross-sectional study that gave birth to live newborns over a six-year period, measuring their smoking status. Notably, their badysis not only showed that smoking cessation was badociated with a reduced risk of premature birth, but also that the probability of premature labor was decreasing. However, the study also found that only about 25% of women who smoked before pregnancy were able to quit smoking throughout their pregnancy. "Pregnancy can be a stressful time in a woman's life, and women who have smoked before pregnancy can smoke or continue to smoke to alleviate this stress," Soneji explains. "Thus, it is the responsibility of health care providers who care for pregnant women to focus once again on smoking cessation.
