Health officials in West Virginia said one raccoon killed by two dogs in the Cheat Lake area had tested positive for rabies.
The Dominion Post announced in a press release that the raccoon was killed on February 7th. A state laboratory confirmed that the raccoon was suffering from rabies.
The statement states that the dogs were vaccinated against rabies and were revaccinated. They will be confined and monitored for 45 days. The owner of the dog is also in treatment.
This is the first confirmed case of rabies in this county this year. The county had four confirmed cases last year.

It is advisable for pet owners to make sure that their dogs and cats are vaccinated against rabies, seal the trash cans and avoid animals with which they are unfamiliar.
