A 14-year-old girl known only as Raminatu was married to 42-year-old Alhaji Faruk in a traditional Islamic wedding in Kumasi, Ashanti region.
Child marriage is prohibited by Ghana’s 1992 constitution, so by law anyone under the age of 18 is a child and therefore cannot marry or marry.
But there are claims that Raminatu may be the youngest person in Ghana to ever be married, which is common in early Islamic traditions.
According to reports, 42-year-old Alhaji Faruk was the sole supplier to Raminatu’s family and it appears that she married him due to a previous deal.
