Roma coach Claudio Ranieri praised his captain, Daniele De Rossi, after his goal allowed a tight 1-0 win against Sampdoria in Serie A on Saturday.
The 35-year-old midfielder had a header from Patrik Schick from a late second-half corner to score and secure the Giallorossi's first win in four games.
For Ranieri, the goal and the performance were proof of the inspirational effect of the Rome-born captain on his team-mates during a tumultuous season.
"De Rossi scored the goal, but most importantly, it's that he's a leader," Ranieri said at the post-match press conference held at Stadio Luigi Ferraris.
"He is a player who is very attached to his city and his club jersey. All his teammates followed him tonight.
"For me, every one of my players has beaten and sacrificed a lot for the good of the team."
The win allows Roma to climb to sixth place, just one point behind AC Milan in the last qualifying spot for the Champions League.
