Megan Rapinoe has said the United States Women’s National Team needs to pass quickly after a surprise 3-0 loss to Sweden in their Olympics opener on Wednesday.

The USWNT saw a record 44 unbeaten game ended in humiliating style as the tournament favorites and the World No.1 ranked team were beaten by two goals from Stina Blackstenius and one from Lina Hurtig.

With four gold medals, the United States has more than any other country and aims to become the first team to win Olympic gold after a World Cup title.

To do that, however, they have to move on quickly after the loss to Peter Gerhardsson and speaking after the game, Rapinoe said: “We got our ass kicked, didn’t we?

“I thought we were a little tight, a little nervous, just doing stupid stuff.

“There is no time to linger and wonder if Sweden lives in our heads or not. We have another game in three days.”

USA coach Vlatko Andonovski added: “It is obvious that we have put ourselves in a big hole, but we are the only ones who can get through it.

“It won’t be easy. We have to get positive results in the next two games, but the fact that there is still a chance [means] I know this team is not going to give up. “

Sweden lead Group G ahead of Saturday’s game against Australia in Saitama, while the United States face New Zealand. The two best teams in the group qualify for the round of 16.

“We have very courageous players and very good leaders,” Swedish coach Gerhardsson said.

“A courageous attitude to win the ball and make the transition so well. Yeah, I’m satisfied.”
