A primary school teacher has caused drama at Milimani courthouse in Nairobi at times when he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for defiling a standard six-year-old student five years ago.

Fredrick Mwangi Wango, who acted unperturbed in court, ignored the judge and distracted himself with a small Bible he read throughout the sentence.

In a fit of anger, Fredrick Mwangi Wango, 45, threw away a New Testament Bible he was reading before sentencing.

And in the hallway outside the first instance court, Wango, who was being escorted to the cells by a prison guard, tried to run away but she held him tight.

The guard motioned for a colleague to help escort the defiler to the prison cells to begin his sentence.

Before the principal principal magistrate David Ndungi announced his verdict “Wango had said prayers while covering his face with a white towel for the face”.

He was also seen reading the scriptures while on the platform.

But after being condemned, he threw the New Testament Bible with the towel over his face and then shouted, “Jesus, why have you forsaken me when the scriptures I have read have assured me that I will be?” released.”

As he raised his hands to the sky, he joked again, “Jehovah God, you are righteous, what happened to me now? Jesus my savior, do I really deserve this prison sentence. What have I done to deserve it.

Inside the cells, he clung to the prison screen door while still moaning.

During his conviction, Mr. Ndungi said he violated the rights of the minor instead of protecting them.

He rejected the accused’s attenuation that “he should have a second chance in life to reform and care for his two children”.

“The rights of your children are not superior to those of the girl you repeatedly defiled until she lost count between 2015 and 2016,” Ndungi said.

Wango, a father of two, who teaches at a school in the city, began his drama last week when he collapsed after being sentenced and then cried uncontrollably.

After the accused recovered, he was asked to remain seated so that the court could finalize the judgment.

The magistrate said that the accused had developed a habit of defiling the young girl.

“The young girl could not remember the number of times the accused defiled her and then threatened her with disastrous consequences if she revealed the illicit and illegal matter,” Ndungi said.

The magistrate said the accused lured the girl to his Mathare Estate residence around 6 a.m. on her way to school on the day her illicit affair was discovered.

Wango locked up the young girl then went to school and returned after 9 a.m. to carry out his secret mission.

Teacher Fredrick Mwangi Wango allegedly tainted the said 6th grade student at Moi Primary School when he hosted her at his Mathare Estate home in Nairobi, Nairobi County, in March 2016.

According to the police report, the complainant’s father who was too drunk left her in the care of Mwangi who is a married man with two children for six months.

The police report said, “She was taken to two different schools but always returned to Mwangi’s house, which makes us suspect.”

When she was first questioned by sex and child officers to establish whether there was a relationship between her and Mwangi, she denied. However, after police escorted the girl to the hospital for an examination, she was then subjected to vigorous counseling before opening up.

She said Mwangi had sexually raped her since she started living with him in his house, threatening her not to reveal it to anyone.

On handing down the sentence, Senior Senior Magistrate David Ndugi said; “The accused is a teacher but he defiled a child, the rights of his children are not superior to those of the child he defiled, I sentenced him to 20 years in prison according to the law. “
