Rare strain of TB discovered in Sargent County

A rare strain of tuberculosis has been found in a cattle herd in Sargent County.

This is a strain of bovine tuberculosis never seen in the United States.
The infection occurred in Sargent County, but the case being confidential, we do not know exactly where in the county.
According to a veterinarian, the Bovine T-B strain corresponds to a strain observed in Mexican cattle.
The infected flock is in a closed area, far from other properties.
For this reason, local veterinarians do not believe this presents a huge risk of spreading through the state.
In addition to all this, closing the federal government means that there will be fewer field employees who will take care of the case.
The disease can be transmitted from animals to humans.
But Dr. Karol Kremens, an intensive care and pulmonary doctor, says that your chances of catching him are very low. There is no need to panic with bovine tuberculosis, especially in western countries like the United States, where there are only a few cases of bovine tuberculosis a year.
Dr. Kremens believes that farmers, butchers and hunters working with large animals are the only people at slightly higher risk.
For the general public, he recommends avoiding raw unpasteurized dairy products.
Dr. Susan Keller, a state veterinarian, said other tests would be done to determine the source and further prevent the T-B from spreading.
