Former President Jerry John Rawlings
Former President Jerry John Rawlings called for a concerted effort to encourage the use of organic fertilizers instead of chemical fertilizers because of the increasing damage they cause to the soil and the environment.
He said, "If we are to seriously limit the use of chemicals in the agricultural sector, some of the well-established fertilizer companies and distributors will have to be hired. Their hold or hold on the officials' bribe must be broken. An investigation into the extent of soil damage over the years should be opened and evidence gathered. "
The former president said that farmers already recognize the advantages and disadvantages of using organic-based fertilizers and have described the persistent use of product-based fertilizers chemical.
He said: "Organic fertilizers are being produced and this needs to be encouraged on a large scale. The interest of criminals is to continue using chemical fertilizers that destroy the soil and our environment. "
Rawlings' comments follow a warning from Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, Minister of the Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, that disastrous health consequences could occur if farmers continue to apply indiscriminate chemicals to their operations.
The minister was quoted as saying: "The increasing and uncontrolled application of chemical substances in agriculture in the country could in the future expose the country to diseases with epidemic proportions".
